VM Centric Storage
vRun delivers a software defined storage layer. This layer, the VM Centric Storage, enables the conversion of standard x86 servers with Just a Bunch Of Disks (JBOD) into an intelligent SAN. The VM Centric Storage joins all disks across servers into a single Scalable Storage Cluster answering the scalability question with ease. Exposing this Storage cluster over iSCSI turns any basic infrastructure with JBOD into an enterprise level iSCSI SAN.
vRun uses a revolutionary bit spread algorithm that excels at delivering performance and availability. Where RAID was designed to protect small storage capacities, vRun is designed to serve the needs of larger, multi-tenant environments. As we enter an era of 2TB and 4TB hard disks, RAID is nearing its end of life. The time it takes for a traditional RAID system to rebuild larger datasets following physical failure is no longer measured in hours but now days or even weeks. During this rebuild the probability of a second catastrophic failure is also becoming unacceptably high.
vRun's approach to performance
vRun uses a sophisticated multi-tier caching principle. Using PCIe flash memory, vRun caching increases performance of your Storage Cluster. In order to further optimize performance, vRun is deduplicating cached data from multiple virtual machines. This improves the efficiency of the cache and increases chances that the cache can actually produce the requested data rather than reverting to slower SATA disks.
In an independent iSCSI SAN performance benchmark, an out-of-the-box Dell PowerEdge R520 with vRun installed was compared with a DELL EqualLogic iSCSI SAN.
This test revealed impressive IO results from the Storage Cluster SAN when compared to traditional storage SAN vendors. Where a single disk system delivers 150 IOPS (Input-Output Operations per second), our SAN solution delivers 10.000-20.000 IOPS for a single node.
To protect IT against failures, organisations take data and system backups. These backups offer the necessary recovery points in case something goes wrong but if on-site IT infrastructure is damaged, compromised or any other major disaster occurs; organisations need to rebuild and deliver IT infrastructure quickly using off-site replication.
With traditional legacy IT, replication functionality is often complex to setup, hard to maintain and expensive. On top, legacy LUN and Volume based replication, originally designed for physical workloads, offers only limited flexibility. Hence, it is not your best partner for virtual workloads.

To create a foolproof business continuity plan, vRun offers an out-of-the-box on-site and off-site data replication functionality on a per-VM level. Different vRun systems can be kept synchronized across multiple locations and/or VM. If one location or VM becomes unavailable, applications and data can be made available from the synchronised vRun location.
With the Cloud Replicator, service providers can consolidate multiple on-site systems and servers into a single replication system, while ensuring all customer systems are securely separated. This allows MSP’s to offer a full site failover without the need to buy the full IT capacity for each customer.
With traditional legacy IT, building a complete solution requires integrating different components. One of the key elements is the possibility to roll back machines and disks. Although there are great tools out there, each one of them requires time to configure and carries additional costs. Also, as the overall IT environment changes or grows, these solutions also need to adapt which may cause additional integration or upgrade burdens and associated costs. Modular Storage Architecture:
vRun’s modular storage architecture comprises a dedicated SSD tier for read-write cache and a SATA tier for inactive/infrequently used data. The secret is vRun’s ability to migrate data across tiers based on frequency of access.
- Unlike traditional/manual tiered storage, that move entire files, vRun moves data at the block level to the optimum tier for improved performance. This is done automatically, based on real-time data.
- vRun’s intelligent storage system records metadata within each block about what was written, when it was written, frequency of access, associated volumes, the retention policy, etc.
- The most used data is moved to the SSD tier, while less used/inactive data is moved to SATA tier.
vRun ensures that you make optimal use of your storage investments and eliminates the need for labor-intensive, organization-wide data classification/migration projects.
vRun’s BitSpread is a distributed storage method that writes data across multiple disks. Accessing a single drive will not yield any usable data without the means to reconstruct it. This makes it nearly invulnerable to security breaches. Moreover, data being distributed based on the storage policy accommodates multiple disk failures without compromising data integrity.
Rebuilding Redundant Data:
vRun quickly and automatically adjusts to disk failures, up to the safety policy of the environment. New data is written to the remaining functional disks, while the self-healing mechanism rebuilds redundant data blocks on alternate disks. Unlike RAID, this is performed on low priority because of the resilience of the data, so it does not affect system performance. When failed disks are replaced in the system, they are automatically rebuilt and integrated into the spread of available disks. This maintains optimal capacity and service levels.
Snapshots and Integrated Data Protection:
- vRun takes snapshots of data as it is written. Snapshots are taken every 15 minutes and can be used as backup storage. They provide roll-back points for restoring data or undoing an action. They are also used as the basis for VM cloning for temporary or testing environments.
- vRun can take hundreds of point-in-time snapshots by creating a copy of a volumes' indices. Changes to existing data or new data are redirected to free space, so there is no performance impact while taking snapshots and to minimize the storage used for snapshots, since only changes are maintained. This also simplifies restoring from snapshots, as no data needs to be copied.
- Snapshots can be kept for a week, a month or up to 3 years. Storing months' worth of backups occupies as little as 3% of the space required with full-copy traditional backups.
vRun efficiently manages space allocation. It allocates disk space to a volume only as data is written. It’s like creating a Gmail account with unlimited mailbox storage, but in reality, space is assigned as and when needed.
Zero Copy Cloning:
vRun uses linked clones to clone existing VMs without needing to actually copy the data. Instead of creating an identical disk to the base VM, vRun creates a reference point to a snapshot of the VM being cloned. Then, it records the changes made to the clone moving forward. Performance is not affected, because the caching is far more efficient. In addition, it prevents excessive consumption of storage resources. This makes cloning an ideal solution for temporary and testing purposes.
Real-time monitoring and analysis spots and remedies potential issues to maximize system uptime, performance and utilization. The storage system self-heals and rebuilds data if hardware fails. Alerts are automatically sent if critical issues are identified.
- Erasure coding technology detects silent corruptions, like bit-rot, and automatically stops using those blocks.
- Forward error correction detects and corrects errors that occur during data transfer without the need transmit the data again.
- All of this is done on low priority, to make sure there is no performance impact.
Using Standard IEEE 802.1Q protocol and VLAN tagging, vRun integrates industry-accepted VLAN functionality into the solution to offer a multi-tenant hosting environment. This means that you can use the same infrastructure for multiple departments/customers for virtual workload hosting, without complex shared resource provisioning required by traditional solutions.
Since IEEE 802.1Q is supported by VMware and most Layer 3 network equipment manufacturers, deploying multi-tenant workloads requires just a few clicks.
vRun uses native block-level replication technology that allows a cloud administrator to define which VMs need to be replicated. Since the data is being replicated in vRun’s native storage format (requiring complex equations to reconstruct the data), it is nearly impossible to steal/capture the data during transmission. This also eliminates the additional overhead of encryption and optimizes data replication and restoration.
